Ensuring Healthy Vision for Children: Early Detection at Linklater & Warren Opticians
At Linklater & Warren Opticians, we are passionate about ensuring children receive the best possible start when it comes to their vision. Good eyesight is essential for learning, development, and confidence, which is why early detection of potential issues is so important.
The importance of Children’s Sight Tests
Children don’t always know when they have a vision problem, and without testing, issues can go unnoticed. Conditions such as amblyopia (lazy eye) and refractive errors (e.g., short-sightedness, long-sightedness, or astigmatism) can affect their education, social skills, and even long-term eye health. Early detection and intervention can prevent lasting visual impairment and ensure children achieve their full potential.

The Children's Eye Screening Process
In South East London, local authorities arrange vision screening for reception age children in state schools. This screening helps identify those who may need further assessment. If a child is flagged as requiring additional investigation, they are referred to an accredited local optometry practice, such as ours, for an enhanced paediatric sight test.
What Happens After Referral?
Once we receive a referral, a member of the practice team will contact parents to arrange an appointment for a thorough assessment. Following the enhanced paediatric sight test, possible outcomes include:
- No problems identified – Parents receive reassurance, and we recommend a routine NHS sight test in 1-2 years.
- Prescription of glasses – If needed, glasses will be prescribed, and the child will be reviewed within the paediatric scheme to monitor progress.
- Referral to a hospital eye service – If necessary we will ensure a swift and appropriate referral to a specialist service for further management.

Our Expertise in Paediatric Eye Care
As providers of NHS-funded Children’s Eye Service, our optometrists have extensive experience in assessing and treating children’s vision needs. Our involvement in the NHS paediatric referral pathway is a testament to our expertise and dedication to paediatric eye care.

Why Regular Sight Tests Are Essential
Even if a child has passed their school screening or doesn’t currently need glasses, regular NHS sight tests are highly recommended. School screenings are a helpful first step, but they do not replace a full eye examination by a qualified optometrist. Glasses prescriptions can arise at any age and a comprehensive sight test can detect subtle vision issues that could impact a child’s learning and development.
We recommend that all children have an NHS sight test at least every two years, or more frequently if advised by an eye care professional.
