Optometrist and Colorimetry practitioner Jasmine Griffin shares the joy of helping patients with visual stress rediscover their love of reading.
“After more than 10 years of assessing and treating people with visual stress, I still find immense satisfaction in alleviating patients’ symptoms through precision-tinted glasses or overlays,” says Jasmine.
“This is especially rewarding when working with children. Hearing from parents about their child’s progress in school or newfound confidence and enjoyment of reading after being prescribed tinted glasses is always a joy.”

“Over the years, I’ve developed a keen eye for identifying patients who may benefit from this approach. During a routine eye test, I often notice certain characteristics in a child’s reading that suggest they may have visual stress. When this happens, I follow up with a coloured overlay assessment to explore whether reading through a coloured filter could improve their visual comfort, reading speed, stamina and comprehension.”
“For patients who see sustained benefit from overlays, I recommend a full colorimetry assessment using the intuitive colorimeter. This advanced technology allows me to adjust the hue (colour), saturation (intensity), and brightness of the tint until we find the exact shade that best improves reading speed and reduces symptoms. Although coloured overlays aren’t a solution for every reading difficulty, visual stress is still an under-recognised condition, and it’s incredibly rewarding to use my expertise to help patients achieve clearer, more comfortable vision whilst reading.”
